What I Learned From Bending Not One But Two Spoons

In December 2023, I went to an event in LA, which was meant to be a business event, so the last thing I thought I would do there was bend a spoon.
Yes, like The Matrix, where the boy said: "Do not try and bend the spoon—that's impossible. Instead, only try to realise the truth: There is no spoon. Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself".
So, let me tell you the story of my spoon bending experience. We set up the night before in preparation for the morning where we did a meditation to send our power the next day but we weren’t told what we would be doing. As you can imagine, I was a bit sceptical.
When we were told to look below our chairs and take out the spoon which we were about to bend, I had my doubts, and there was probably fear. What if I couldn’t do it? What if I was the only one who didn’t bend a spoon? Was this really possible?
There were about 1,000 people in the room and Jenni, who was leading the exercise, said it didn’t matter either way, it was the lesson in it that was the key.
Anyway, we went through the meditation, and I felt myself forcing it, trying with all my might to bend this stainless-steel spoon but to no avail.
So, I started to truly listen to the meditation and relax into it, before I knew it, I had bent the spoon in half. The song “Unstoppable” by Sia was playing and I felt I was fully in my body for the first time in a long time and could feel what can only be described as electricity flowing through me. When it finished my hands were shaking and it felt so surreal.
When we get caught up in our every day, we lose what is truly inside of us and don’t see the full potential within us. We can do anything, and we are capable of anything. But along the way we get lost, people tell us what we can and can’t do, we lose a sense of who we are when life happens, and we forget how incredible we are.
Fast forward to the following year, I went back to this event, this time in Phoenix, and I didn’t think they would, but we did the spoon bending exercise again!
Well, so many thoughts came up, like what if I can’t do it this time, what if it was a fluke. Then I thought what if up. What if I could do it, what if I could bend the spoon even more.
We tend to always think “what if down”. What if this goes wrong, what if this doesn’t work out, well how about thinking “what if up”. We’re using the same brain power and energy, so why not use it in a positive way that motivates us.
I love the quote by Erin Hanson, which I included in my book, “A Cocktail Of Clarity”: “What if I fail? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly.”
Interestingly, the person to my left was there for the first time and she was very sceptical and said it was impossible, there was no way that she could do that.
The person to my right who had been there the previous year and not bent the spoon was like, let’s go!
Again, we went through the meditation and again I felt myself forcing, my ego was messing with me. So, I took a deep breath relaxed into it and let go.
That’s what generally helps us in life, letting go, surrendering, not needing to have all the answers, just being. We tend to resist this, as we want to be in control but magic happens when we trust and let go.
This time, it was even more powerful! The spoon twisted around and around in my hands, there was no effort involved, it felt like it just melted, and I could shape it easily. I had an urge to share this energy that I felt inside me with the others around me, I wanted everyone to feel this.
Again, “Unstoppable” blasted out at the end and I felt myself dancing, hands in the air feeling fully alive, I couldn’t believe this was me and this was possible. I did feel unstoppable…it was an incredible feeling!
I finally opened my eyes and the person to my left who was full of doubt, hadn’t bent the spoon, while the person to my right had bent the spoon in exactly the same way as I had!
The lessons I learned from bending the spoon that I wanted to share are:
When we doubt ourselves and are afraid, we stop ourselves from truly stepping into our potential
We are all unique and have gifts and strengths that we don’t even know are inside us that are waiting to shine.
When we think “what if up” instead of “what if down”, we shift our mindsets
Absolutely anything is possible and everything is energy
Everything we need is within us and that's how change happens, from the inside out.
When we hold ourselves back through doubt and fear, we stop what is trying to flow through us.
Everyone should have the opportunity to bend a spoon at least once in their life!
I now have these spoons on my bedside table, so every morning when I wake up, I see them and it reminds me that whatever the day brings, I can face it and as you know, life lifes.
I'll end with another favourite quote of mine, in my book, which I attributed it to Nelson Mandela, but have since become aware it's a Marianne Williamson quote:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us."
This is what I do in my work. I help you come back to yourself and remember your gifts, talents and power that’s inside you. If you feel you've outgrown where you are, you’re feeling or wanting to make a shift in some way and are questioning what next, this work is for you. I do this through Human Design, EFT and subconscious work, to help you build self-trust, gain clarity and use your energy in the best way that serves you.
If you'd like to find out more, get in touch. And, if you've bent a spoon, I'd love to hear your story!
